Here are just some of the signed up climate explorers.
Jane FinnertyI love being part of the community here in Oxford - I get a real buzz from the social interaction through sports the WI, Schools and some a variety of action groups interested in areas such as packing and recycling. I feel that being a Climate explorer along with my eldest son Will, will give us access to resources and know how to become more of a catalyst within these groups and hopefully inspire people to understand what climate change means to them so they can start to make some informed choices about our lifestyle. Kayley HattonI've produced a quiz which is to be given to students, friends and family to find out what they know about climate change and its impacts. I've been doing the Oxford attitudes surveys at school, and am in the process of creating a powerpoint presentation to show to young students in school, as well as producing a display about climate change for people in my school. Pat Clark Science Co-ordinator for Oxfordshire Federation of WIs.Since I was knee high to grasshopper, I've been interested in the natural world, and as a member of WI, I have had many opportunties to get involved with environmental and ecological issues. Two years ago, I was appointed Science Co-ordinator for Oxfordshire Federation of WIs (OFWI). In that role, I try to hone in on those science-based issues which are likely to be most interesting and relevant to WI members. At the outset, I chose climate change as one of the main areas of focus, and it was a happy co-incidence that OFWI became a partner organisation with the Environmental Change Institute's Climate-X-Change project. It is a marvellous project - lively, instructive, sociable and a terrific networking opportunity. Among the activities WI members are currently involved in are the Attitude Survey, recruitment of Climate Explorers and plug monitoring. In the planning are a 'Women Scientists' event and a rather special competition, both linked to the Climate-X-Change project - more news in due course!." Olly WoodfordHello! I'm Olly, an Engineering PhD student, and committed climate explorer. For my part, as well as discussing with my friends and family how important it is for us reduce our impact on the environment, I've set up a community project to raise awareness on a wider scale. It's called Mpower Oxford, and we run a climate awareness fair in January each year, our first being this year. As part of that I want to create some empowering lesson plans on climate change for schools, and would be interested in hearing from anyone who'd like to help with that. Will FinnertyMy name is Will and I am in year 7 at Cherwell school. I think we don't understand all the arguments about the climate and it is another thing to worry about on top of everything else happening in the world like the war in Iraq. I don't know yet what to do as a climate explorer but I do know that me and my friends are always buying a lot of things like new phones and computers so maybe I will try to do something about not always needing so much new stuff and if that help climate change then good. I would like to start a climate change blog on my school website so I will look into it as I am good at websites. Meet more explorers here!
