NO RULES

It was as if you could say nothing,
do anything
and it would not matter.  Now
the glass is cracked, the curtain
torn, the gold
is fool's gold, the seven-league boots
- yours
till you grew tall enough to touch the sky -
the perfect place
to jump from, fall
                      down
                      from.  Believe a straight line
between then and now and you lie -
no giveaway maps,
no rules
backdate between.  Rivers were there to be drained,
forests clear-cut, wolves shot, mountains moved -
all that unregulated rape still
has to be paid for.
