Monitoring and Reducing Home Electricity Usage

Awareness of electricity usage is the first step towards reduction. We can identify the less energy efficient appliances and also the cost of leaving lights on or overfilling the kettle. A membership of http://www.imeasure.org.uk/ will enable the householder to track electricity usage and compare this with the typical family in a similar house. This will enable the cost of electric immersion water heating to be compared with running the boiler during the Summer.

The consumption of individual appliances can be monitored in two ways. With a meter for an individual socket the consumption of the appliance can be monitored directly. Alternatively a mains monitor can display the usage each minute and the cost of switching on a new appliance can be seen on the display. Soon both functions will be available in a single device which will also provide the ultimate historical record for computer analysis.
