Oxfordshire Eco-Buildings Open Days 2009

The Solar Electric Victorian Terrace
164 Howard Street, Ox4 3BG Oxford

A 1.82 kW solar photovoltaic roof, retrofitted to a classic Victorian terraced property. The system produces 1500 kWh of green electricity per year, making the house a net exporter of electricity.

Directions:
Bus to Iffley Road, get off at 'The Coop' super market Walk from Coop shop along Howard Street - house is on the right.

36 Harpes Road, Sunnymead,

A 1890s terrace house with evacuated tube solar panel, condensing boiler fitted in 2005, Thermal Sempatap on walls and ridged radiator foil for insulation.

Directions:
Buses from Central Oxford to Squitchey Lane, Banbury Road off Banbury Road to end of Hernes Road - Harpes Road goes down to the right.

Beehive, Manzil Way, Cowley Road, Oxford. OX4 1YH

Thu 10th 10am - 3pm

Straw bale building garden workshop, lime plastered walls, recycled tyres used for foundations - rammed with hardcore, double glazing, painted with organic paint.

Directions:
Bus Nr. 1 and 5 from City Centre and Railway station. From city centre by car go to Cowley Road 'Tesco' car park on left (Union Street), then walk to Manzil Way (3 Minutes).

First Community Centre in the country to install Solar panels as alternative energy solution on roof - part of ‘The Big Green Challenge' for Low Carbon West Oxford.

Conversion of the Globe Pub into four houses. Low energy specifications with high insulation, triple glazing, photovoltaic panels / thermal hot water panels & underfloor heating throughout.

Directions:
Walking distance from City centre. No. 17 stagecoach bus from city centre to Cranham street - bus stop at property. tTake Walton Street from city centre, left into Cranham Street after approx. half a mile - property is 2 blocks down on the right.

A talk on solar hot water  at work:
OUP has 36 square meters of evacuated tube collectors, providing hot water for the main kitchen and theshowers in the fitness centre. Come to this lunchtime talk to find out how they did it, how much energy they have saved, and how you can do something similar.

Bus 1 or 5 from Cty Centre - as far as Clive Road. East Oxford Florence Park - Havelock Road is next turning on right after the Clive Road bus stop.

1958 semi-detached house renovated to achieve 59% reduction in CO2 emissions. It is fully insulated and has rainwater harvesting, solar thermal hot water and
heating, organic paints & exterior ecopaving.

Directions:
Buses 8,9,7c from city centre alight at Headington shops - buses also from Thornhill Park and Ride. From London Road Headington shops) turn down Windmill Road (at traffic lights) - St. Leonards Road is first left.

Annie (green boat) Oxford Canal, Wolvercote

Using reclaimed materials woods, paints, etc. Also includes compost toilet, full solar energy, ‘green house', heating / cooking / hot water run on solid fuel. Engine runs on biofuel and cooking oil.

Oxford City Centre - from Magdalan Street Stop C4 (on Magdalen Street) - Take Oxford Bus Company Bus 6 towards Lower Wolvercote, get off at Upper Wolvercote, Wolvercote School (W-Bound) (on Mere Road) Walk from W-bound along 'First Turn' towards 'Wolvercote Green' and Plough Pub - it's South of Wolvercote lock and a 1 minute walk from 'Plough Pub'. Across the bridge.

Space for Old Music Hall office staff, built of straw and with no metal, no concrete, and zero carbon. Building managed by 'Ethical Property'.

Edwardian arts and crafts cum neo-tudor house in own grounds. Very low carbon producing heating and hot water system, featuring one of Oxfordshire's first auto feed wood-pellet boilers (output to 25kw) plus integrated solar panel on roof.

Directions:
Sadly no public transport. Located on A329 between Wallingford and Moulsford - 2 miles off Winterbrook roundabout.
It's a 10-15 min, mostly flat bike ride from Cholsey station.

Solar hot water system, wood burner, small (300 litre) rainwater harvesting system, extra insulation in the loft.

Directions:
10 minutes walk from town centre, which is served by buses from Reading and Oxford (X39 and X40). From town centre walk west along High Street until it turns into Station Rd. - hundred meters on the left past 'Esso' garage.

The Northmoor Trust Building Complex is a model of sustainable building. Incorporating converted barns, an award-winning timber framed eco- building, water, waste and heating eco-system/ features and a large solar array.

Directions:
No public transport, sorry. 10 miles south of Oxford - next to Wittenham Clumps

Extended 1960s house with high insulation, low air leakage, solar hot water & wood stove / hot water heater - not gas or oil.

Directions:
Bus 66 from Oxford Park End Street towards Swindon. Change in Faringdon opposite Medical Centre to Bus 67 towards Wantage. Get off in Stanford in the Vale.

A 17th century cottage with woodpellet boiler, in-wall heating system, breatheable eco-insulation (clayplaster, reed board, cotton-hemp, lime screed) and other ecomaterials (low E windows, ecopaint, sustainable oak floors, water/ energy saving appliances).

S3 from Oxford to 'Judd's garage' + 15 minutes walk. 2 miles north of Woodstock, off the A44 signpost - 'Wootton'

Fairview, Bessels Lea, Blewbury, Didcot OX11 9NW

'Fairview' is a modest 1920s bungalow which is in the process of becoming an eco-home. A variety of energy and water saving measures are already in place, including a wood burner, solar hot water, low energy lightening and rainwater harvesting.

Directions:
Connects with Didcot Parkway mainline station. Bus stop in same road. Cyclists use sustrans route 44 to East Hagbourne and follow lane to Blewbury about 2 miles Bessels Lea Road is off the main road from Blewbury to East Hagbourne an Didcot

Solar panels (water heating), photovoltaic panel, condensing boiler, cavity wall insulation, insulated loft, low-energy lighting throughout. The PV panel powers the pump for the solar water panel.

From Oxford Park End Street Bus 66 towards Swindon. Bus stop on Coxwell Road. Opposite entrance to to Secondary School.

Designed for passive solar gain with solar tubes (water heating), green roof, triple glazing, underfloor heating,
woodburning stoves, condensing boiler, cavity wall insulation, insulated loft, & eco-extension built to AECB.

From Oxford Park End Street Bus 66 towards Swindon. Get off Faringdon Station Road.

Corner Cottage, School Lane,
Lower Brailes, near Banbury, OX15 5HP

Sat 12th 10am - 1pm

Solar hot water, a wood burning stove with a back boiler, and a 3.36kW solar PV system. We also have small PV systems for shed and greenhouse lights, and a permaculture designed garden.

Directions:
Bus 50A from Banbury towards Stratford-upon- Avon, get off at Lower Brailes School Lane is located off High Street to the left
