1) The Big Carbon Challenge invites Oxfordshire community groups to drive down their carbon emissionsOxfordshire Rural Community Council and Oxfordshire ClimateXchange have teamed up with Cottsway Housing Association for the Big Carbon Challenge 2010. Launching in October 2010, entries are invited from new and recently formed community groups who want to take action on climate change. The deadline for entries is 15 October 2010.
Competition groups will be trained using the Carbon Conversations method, a tried and tested means of engaging with climate change and reducing carbon emissions. Facilitators from competition groups would be trained in late October 2010 and each group entrant would collectively measure their carbon emissions (from home energy, shopping, transport, etc.) soon after. These measurements would then be taken again in May 2011. Cash prizes await those groups which cut their emissions the most!
Groups will also be judged on how well they have engaged with the public and will be encouraged to hold community events, such as home energy ‘clinics', talks, and film screenings.
The Big Carbon Challenge 2010 is part of Oxfordshire County Council's Low Carbon Communities Programme. For more information on the Big Carbon Challenge 2010 and an entry form contact Jo Hamilton at ClimateX, jo[at]climateX.org, 01865 275 856. Or visit www.climatex.org/oxon-climate-communities .
