Low Carbon Wolvercote - www.climatex.org/wolvercoteLow Carbon Wolvercote has a charter, ran a great Car free day, will shortly be celebrating its first birthday and will be having an energy expo in May. Find out more on the web pages. Contact - Vicky Harris vicky_harris@btopenworld.com*** Canalside Environment Group - North Oxford along the Oxford CanalThe Canalside Environment Group was formed in November 2005 and includes the Waterways, Waterside and Aristotle Lane estates; they all lie along the side of the Oxford Canal, in North Oxford. The aim of the group is to promote sustainable lifestyles in the local area and help develop a sense of community on our new estates. With all our events we actively encourage newcomers to take an active role. We have grown from an initial meeting of 6 people to a community action group with a mailing list of approx 80 in March 08. Contact: cegroup@hotmail.co.uk*** Low Carbon West Oxfordcontact: lowcarbon@hotmail.co.ukLow Carbon West Oxford (LCWO) is a recent initiative set up by local residents to reduce our carbon footprint, both individually and as a community. We want to involve all sections of the community. People can get involved to the extent and in the ways that you want. So far local groups have been formed to work on renewable energy, traffic, food, waste reduction, and the sustainable use and sharing of energy/resources. We also have street representatives to provide information and support to neighbours to help them reduce their carbon footprint. *** Grandpont Energy and Climate Change Optimists (GECCO)After a launch meeting in October 2007, we decided to focus on domestic energy reductions in the Grandpont area. We willl measure/estimate the energy consumption of the whole 2500 population of Grandpont and schools, businesses, churches and shops in the area and work to reduce it. Contact: Richard Bailey - richard@oxwise.co.uk*** Transition OxfordWhat is Transition Oxford? Imagine an Oxford that uses a fraction of the fossil fuel it uses today, and is also a thriving, happy and resilient community. Transition Oxford is the journey we can take towards that vision, and how everyone is needed along the way, and everyone can play a part in planning it and making it happen. See details of the intro event here. Why is Transition Oxford a good idea? The twin pressures of climate change and peak oil are driving this. If we pay no attention to them, it's easy to imagine a dark and miserable future within our lifetimes. It's becoming increasingly difficult to imagine that everything will be OK and it won't really happen. We can all work together to change things for the better, and it will be fun! Want to be a part of it?Whether you are already active, or you have been thinking about it and are ready to take your first steps, opportunities to help will present themselves. Contact: Tim Hall thall@earthwatch.org.uk*** Lewknor Chiltern GatewayThe key aims of the project are to work with the local church, work in partnership with local conservation organisations, form links with schools and to work in partnership with Sage (Oxford's Christian environmental group with long-standing A Rocha links) to promote creation inspired worship around the Diocese. Contact: sbrignall@psaconnect.net*** FaringdonOn December 15 Faringdon signed the Nottingham Declaration. We believe that we are the first town to sign the Declaration as it is usually signed by local authorities. I read the excellent statement prepared by the Wolvercote group but we but did not have the courage to be so innovative and decided that we needed the guidance contained in the Nottingham package. The occasion of the signing was a very successful event in bringing climate change further to people's notice - and we have been very pleased and encouraged by the response we have had. We have a Town Council working party to tackle the challenge of climate change, consisting of a representative from each of the TC's 4 committees and also from other organisations in the town - the Churches, the Chamber of Commerce and the Faringdon Area Project which has just begun a 2nd Healthcheck for Faringdon. The aim is that these organisations will each have their own projects but will support each other and avoid any duplication.

Improving home energy efficiency appeared to be the most effective proposition, based on the proposal to use a thermal imaging camera to identify where homes could be losing heat. In November 2007 a "Thermal Imaging Proposal" was made to the South Oxfordshire District Council for the purchase of a suitable camera, coupled with an operational programme for its use amongst the 600 or so houses in the village. Following trials of several types of camera, SODC purchased one of them and supporting software which was delivered on 3 January 2008 for loan to the Group. Six members of the Group were trained to use it and three mounted the imaging software on their home computers.
