Sustainable Wallingford
Sustainable Wallingford is a group of local residents who are committed to making our town more environmentally sustainable and reducing its ecological impact.
The group was formed in 2003 by people living in and around Wallingford. Since it was founded, Sustainable Wallingford has become well known locally for a range of activities that involve local people and raise awareness of the need to reduce the demands we make on the resources of our planet.
Sustainable Wallingford has around 35 active members and is in regular contact with over 250 local residents who attend our events and receive our newsletter. We also work in partnership with local government, schools, hospitals, food producers and businesses to promote sustainability.
Our activities so far:
- Established regular SwapShops and recycling collection days (about 4 a year).
- Reusable cotton bags with our name / logo given to shoppers in the town.
- Recycled three-quarters of the waste from the 2006 Bunkfest (local folk festival)
- Introduced washable nappies to local maternity unit with prize money for an earlier real nappy scheme.
- Local cinema showed "An Inconvenient Truth" which we followed with a discussion.
- Published two "Buy local" directories and distributed them in town and surrounding area.
- Supported the Fir Tree School garden project - OSCA winner 2006
