Oxfordshire ClimateXchange update #37 - July ‘08

The latest news and upcoming events from ClimateXchange. Welcome to July's update - featuring communities feedback, consultations, eco-renovation opportunities, events, new reports. 1. COMMUNITIES

1.1 Faringdon Eco-week went well - and are now the proud world record holders for their turbine hug  - see the picture. The world record breaking turbine hug at Westmill Windfarm on 21st June 08. Sean Walker ERF Services Ltd.

 

1.2 Kirtlington Footprint Fair went well, with exhibitions,stalls about thermal imaging and reducing domestic footprint  in the home, a poster exhibition by the local school, a dog show and much more. The day achieved its aim of spreading information to a large number of individuals, and raised £800  towards energy-efficiency measures in the Village Hall. Well done Kirtlington!

1.3 Kidlington vs Climate Change will be having a stall this year at the Kidlington Gala, 12-5 at Exeter Hall, Kidlington. Further info about the group: kidlingtonvsclimatechange@yahoo.co.uk

1.4 OXFORDSHIRE 2030 CONSULTATION
The Oxfordshire Partnership is developing a Sustainable Community Strategy
for Oxfordshire. The Partnership welcomes reactions, comments and ideas on
the draft strategy and delivery plan. In particular we are interested in
areas such as:
· What you consider are the most important issues?
· Whether there are any other priorities you think are missing?
· How you/your organisation can contribute to delivering the strategy?
· Are the measures identified in the delivery plan the right ones?

1.5 BIG MONEY AVAILABLE FOR LOCAL COMMUNITY GROUPS
We have some great news if your group is looking for funding! The
Oxfordshire Community Foundation (OCF) has been successful with a bid to
Government for significant funding over the next three years. The money is
to be disbursed across the county to assist small local groups that are
working to improve their communities in any way, shape or form. For more

1.6 LOW CARBON COMMUNITIES CONFERENCE

Sat 4th Oct, Llangollen in Wales. North Wales on Saturday 4th October at the Royal International Pavilion. It will run 10.30am to 4.00pm, with keynote speakers and plenty of opportunity to network. 2. ECO RENOVATION

2.1 ECO-RENOVATION BLOG

To find out how the work on Catherine's house is going (external insulation now being applied) see http://climatex.org/users/catherined/blog/ . If you're eco-renovating your house, or have a story to share, why not write a blog too?

2.2 OXFORDSHIRE OPEN ECO-HOMES - VOLUNTEERS WANTED

The open eco-homes days will be on 11-14th September this year, featuring over 20 eco-renovated homes across Oxfordshire. Volunteers are needed to help at the homes - contact toni@coinet.org.uk if you'd like to be one of them.

2.3 ENERGY CONSERVATION FOR HOMES IN OXFORD (ECHO)TRAINING

Oxford City Council invite you to attend  Energy Conservation for Homes in Oxford (ECHO) Training for community group representatives. They are inviting community reps in order to get feedback on how they can make the training more accessible to community groups.

 The  ECHO training is free and covers:

            ·           Home Insulation

            ·           Heating and Hot water

            ·           Fuel use and tariff issues

            ·           Damp and mould

            ·           Grants and subsidies

  Training will be held on the morning of Wed 23rd July. We will use input from the session to design a condensed ECHO training which will be available to the wider community and to the street reps of local groups. If demand is sufficient we hope to be able to offer the training at local community venues in the future. If you are interested in attending the July 23rd session (venue to be confirmed) contact  lthompson@oxford.gov.uk asap (places limited).

 

2.4 NEW REPORT: BUILDING A GREENER BRITAIN

Green Housing Upgrades Would Create £3.5 Billion Market for Builders, says Oxford University's Environmental Change Institute.  Building firms, product manufacturers and suppliers could stand to tap into a new market worth between £3.5 and £6.5 billion per year if the UK developed policies, skills programmes, and financial incentives to upgrade our existing housing stock to make it greener and more energy efficient. 2.5 THE OXFORD UNION DEBATE -

Architecture would be better off without Schools of Architecture

3. CLIMATE THRILLER ON TV


Break out the beers; fire up the patio heater and plasma TV for a new climate thriller on BBC2, 23/25 July at 9pm.  It's written by Simon Beaufoy (The Full Monty), and produced by Kudos (Spooks). "This topical thriller sees oil executives, environmental activists and politicians collide in the battle between economic success and ecological responsibility." 4. CLIMATE CHANGE AT THE MOVIES... Screening and discussion of ‘The Age of Stupid'

7pm, Tuesday the 22nd of July at The Ultimate Picture Palace, Jeune St (off Cowley Rd), Oxford

The Age of Stupid stars Oscar-nominated actor Pete Postlethwaite as an old man living in the devastated world of 2055, looking back at "archive" footage from 2008, asking "Why didn't we stop climate change when we had the chance?". Film followed by a Q&A with Franny Armstrong (director) and Layefa Malin (Nigerian star of the film).
There are only 100 seats, so we advise you book soon. Tickets are available from the UPP box office for £5.50 (tel. 01865 245288).

Written & directed by "McLibel" filmmaker Franny Armstrong and produced by Oscar-winning John Battsek, the film will be released in cinemas in Autumn 2008.

6. CAMP FOR CLIMATE ACTION

You can find out more about the Camp and meet people from Oxford who are
going along, at the following events, or email oxford@climatecamp.org.uk .
Monday 21st July, 6.30pm - 8.30pm, film showing, get-together and planning
meeting with free cake(!). Location: OARC (upstairs at the East Oxford
Community Centre)

Monday 28th July, 7pm - 8.30pm, get-together and planning meeting
Location: OARC (upstairs at the East Oxford Community Centre)

This is an open invitation to anyone and everyone to come and join us at
Kingsnorth in Kent between the 3rd and 11th of August. Come for as long or
as little as you like, but if possible make sure to be there on Saturday
9th before mid-day, for an inspiring day of mass action about  Kingsnorth
power station (see: http://www.climatecamp.org.uk/massaction). The Camp is
easily accessible - the nearest train station is only 50 minutes from
Central London.

The Climate Camp is saying NO to proposals to build a new generation of
coal power stations, and YES to sustainable living.

 

7. AUTUMNAL IDEA - ABUNDANCE

Abundance is a project to harvest the seasonal glut of local fruit like apples, pear and plums. Each year hundreds of fruit trees go unpicked either because people don't notice them, may not be physically able to harvest them or there are just too many fruits at one time.  Take a look here:
