If you've got any questions about eco-renovation, please post them here. We'll be checking regularly, and will either enlist the help of local experts, or direct you to other sources of information.

hi Jo
we are just embarking on a project to insulate our detached
victorian house in Marston. We have begun to chip away teh
concrete render that was put on it in the ?70s and discovered the
lovely bricks and stone window surrounds below. We will also be
replacing the windows (double glazed but plastic and v ugly) with
double (or triple>?) wooden sash.
We've found a stone mason and window-maker but I am really not
sure about the best (breathable) external insulation to use.
I have looked up all I can (EST, greenbuilding, CABE,
limegreen etc) and found various kinds but nowhere that compares
them all independently - is there anything like that? I can look at
the U-values and the cost but would like recommendations from
anyone who has actually tried any of them or done research on their
pros and cons.
The other thing is, of course, is that it all seems REALLY
expensive! between £40 and £60 a square metre and
that's without installation. SO another question is - are
there any grants out there (that might help us decide which kind of
insulation) and do you know anyone experienced in installing in the
oxford area?
Many thanks for any advice

Hi,
I was just browsing the internet and came across your site. I
have just got involved in a project to renovate a 1000 year old
church in NW London and create an arts and heritage community
centre. The building will need a huge amout of work and as I am
very active in 10:10 (www.1010global.org) I would love to make sure
that we have done everything we can to make the building as low
carbon/env friendly as possible. Please "like" the Drama workhouse
project facebook group if you are interested:

And get in touch if you have any good contacts/ideas. I think
the story would be a fab TV show and I am in the process of
speaking to production companies.
Best wishes

We are converting our loft space and building an extention which
creates a new loft section in addition to the existing loft. We are
struggling with how we should best insulate the eaves. The new bit
has breathable membrane which is taped and sealed well, but the old
bit has old 1950's tar and fibre felt which is torn in places.
Unfortunately we can't afford to reroof the whole thing. We are
wondering what the best insulation would be. Should we use well
fitted and sealed celotex in the eaves and sheeps wool in the top,
sheeps wool all round, different insulation for the different types
of felt? Has anyone dealt with similar things and found a good
solution?
Thanks,
Jenna
