The community garden project is for local people and community organisations that want to help turn a former garage site and contaminated wasteland into a community garden as a shared educational and recreational resource. Who is it for? The community garden will be for local people and community groups to enjoy a community area with trees, flowers and a space for barbeques and a sandpit for young children. It will also be a place where people can learn about different kinds of gardening, waste-management and renewable energy. It will have raised beds for disabled people who cannot access allotment facilities. It will have a polytunnel where local people without access to a greenhouse can have shared space to grow seedlings or plants needing shelter. It will be a place to run creative workshops and events and build community. Where is it and what is happening now? It is at the Oxford end of Barracks Lane just where it turns from road back to bicycle path. It is owned by the City Council which has now cleared the derelict garages and granted a 15 year lease to the project. The project is managed as an incorporated charity with 10 trustees and a local steering group of interested people. We have raised funds and the concrete removal starts January 2007. We have also got Awards for All funding to run workshops and events throughout the year. We want to raise more funding for a community garden building, toilets and a range of other facilities and activities. Showing your support and getting involved The best way you can show your support is by becoming a Friend of the Barracks Lane Garden Project. We are asking for a £1 or more donation. Your name will go on our circulation list for further information as the project progresses and you will get invited to any events or activity days.
