Marriott’s New Bonvoy Rewards – Marriott, SPG, and Ritz Carlton Rewards

In 2016, Marriott acquired Starwood Properties (SPG) making them the largest hotel chain in the world.  We previously wrote about the upcoming merger between the Marriott and SPG rewards programs.  The Marriott Bonvoy program is the evolution of this merger.  This new rewards program will be the replacement for Marriott Rewards, The Ritz-Carlton Rewards and SPG Rewards Programs.  The new Bonvoy program is set to go live on February 13th, 2019.

What Consumers Can Expect With This New All Inclusive Rewards Platform

What we know right now is that this new program will replace the other existing reward programs.  We can expect more details in the coming weeks but for now customers can read more about this upcoming change at the Meet Marriott Bonvoy site.  Customers who have the current reward programs will automatically be converted to the new rewards program.  Most importantly, customers will of course not lose any of their current reward points.

The biggest questions consumers are wondering is whether this new change will come with any updates regarding how rewards will be earned.  So far we do not have any indication that reward earnings will be impacted but we will keep a close eye on this.  New programs often come with additional incentives to create more of a buzz so we excitingly await any additional announcements on this front.

What We Like About This New Program

Marriott customers will be thrilled to have their rewards all in one place.  This will be a great relief for customers who regularly stay at Marriott, Ritz-Carlton, and SPG properties.  There are three credit card lines which provide rewards for their respective programs:

Consumers using more than one of these credit cards will love to have all of their rewards in one place.  Your future points will eventually be managed all in one place.  This will make your reward redemption process much flexible and straightforward.

What We Don’t Like About This New Program

The only downside to this program is that I am still not sold on the name.  Bonvoy is clearly a take on the French phrase “Bon Voyage”.  The sentiment of this phrase, is of course, wishing someone well on their journey.  The name is certainly apt for travelers using this program but we will see how consumers react to this clever name Marriott has chosen.  Additional updates will be provided as we get more information about this upcoming rewards program merger.  What do you think about this new program?  Let us know in the comments below.
